Last Thursday (21 Jan 2010) saw the council's annual 'Fit City' event take place, aimed at helping employees to become more active and make healthier lifestyle choices.

Local government employers have finally given their response to the 2010 pay claim from unions, saying there will be no pay offer but a pay freeze for all employees. In an effort to get an early settlement the three trade unions involved in the National Joint Council put forward the 2010 pay claim in early November.  This claim was for a one year deal of 2.5% or £500 whichever was the greater.

Unison head office is consulting with branches on the options for improvements to the terms and conditions that are agreed nationally – those in the ‘Green Book’. We would like to hear your views on these proposals – e-mail unison@norwich.gov.uk.

The first phase of the public and staff consultation is almost complete. This has been a very busy period for the branch, and we have provided support to many members during this worrying time and received some responses from members on specific proposals that were taken forward in our consultation meetings with management.

Members affected by the draft savings proposals have been briefed by management. The Unison Branch Committee has also been briefed on the principals of the proposals, and stewards in affected areas have been given a more in depth briefing on individual proposals.

Following the recent communications from the council about projects and proposals that will impact on staff, and the upcoming staff consultation programme, the branch committee would like to make the following statement: “We understand the reasons why the council needs to make savings; however, we want to make sure that everything possible is done to avoid job losses and especially any redundancies.
