UNISON members across England and Wales have voted 90.2% in favour of accepting the proposed changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).

Members covered by Local Government Pension Scheme in England and Wales are being urged to vote yes to a new LGPS 2014 scheme when they are balloted this month. In all around 660,000 members in five UNISON service groups will be covered by the ballot, including:

It has taken a long time and months of hard negotiation but, at last, the ministers at the Department of Communities and Local Government have signed off the proposals and given agreement for consultations to take place.  Those taking part in these consultations will be UNISON, UNITE and GMB and also the employers organisation, through the Local Government Association. UNISON's Local Government Service Group Executive met on 31st May to consider the proposals and a timetable for consultation and a full postal ballot of members.

UNISON’s negotiators were given the green light to continue discussions with government ministers on changes to public sector pensions.

The on-off negotiations on the principles and timetable for discussions on the future of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) are back on track. They seemed to have been dealt a mortal blow following the big spanner thrown into the works by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles. Confusion had been caused after Mr Pickles mentioned financial limits  on the pension scheme in his letter agreeing to principles drawn up by the unions and the Local Government Association (LGA).

Pension contributions will rise by 50% from April 2012 under plans set out by George Osborne in last year's Comprehensive Spending Review.“Progressive” increases in employee contributions will see contribution payments to the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) rise by an average of 3.2% over three years from their current level (between 5.5% and 7.5% of salary). The Government is predicting that only 1% of current LGPS members will opt out of the scheme as a result of the increases.
