Pay Campaign 2009

The pay claim for 2009/10 has been submitted to the employers, nationally and locally.  Following the submission the employers side are taking their time over a response and it is unlikely that we will have an offer much before the end of April.  As a reminder, the overarching claim is as follows: 'To improve real pay levels, the Trade Union Side seeks a one-year, across the board pay increase of at least the level of retail price inflation with additional increases for the lower paid.'

We live, as they say, in interesting times. We have just witnessed blind panic on the world stock markets, collapses of major banks and insurance institutions, whole economies on the brink of bankruptcy. How this will all pan out nobody knows (I’ve always liked the quote, though I’m not sure who it’s from, that “economic forecasting is not a respectable human activity”), but as we head into recession, job losses and home repossessions are becoming an altogether more regular occurrence.

The NJC Trade Union Side has agreed the structure of the 2008/09 pay claim following the results of the branch consultation held last month. The agreed summary of the claim is as follows: “To improve real pay levels, the Trade Union Side seeks a one-year, across-the-board pay increase of at least the level of retail price inflation with additional increases for the lower paid.” Other points agreed were:

While the 2008 claim is still under dispute, focus is turning towards next years pay claim. UNISON wants to know what local government workers want to see in next year’s pay claim and is consulting branches on the possible options. The Norwich City Branch Committee will meet on Wed 22 October in the Wymer Room at 12.30pm, and the response to the consultation will be the first item on the agenda.
