UNISON members in local government will go on strike on 16 & 17 July – was the news confirmed by Unison’s Industrial Action Committee last Friday. The action affects 600,000 local government members, including social workers, librarians, school meals workers, refuse collectors, surveyors and teaching assistants. They will walk out to protest this year’s below-inflation pay offer of 2.45%.

UNISON members in local government in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have voted by 55% to 45% for a programme of sustained strike action over a 2.45% pay offer. The union’s negotiating team will meet today to decide what action to recommend to the union's industrial action committee that meets on Friday 27 June. Commenting on the ballot result, general secretary Dave Prentis said: "This is a solid vote for action and a clear message to the local government employers that our members are willing to fight for a decent pay rise.

The branch consultation on the 2008 pay offer closed on Tuesday, with 150 responses received from Unison members. Of these, 71 (47%) voted to accept the employers’ offer of 2.45%, and 79 (53%) voted to reject the offer on the basis they agree to take strike action.

Strike action has been confirmed for 16 & 17 July 2008.  Unison is urging all members to go on strike and show support for our campaign for better pay.
